Over the Labor Day Weekend holiday, I had the pleasure of heading down to Key West aka “The Conch Republic”, a destination I used to frequent with my family multiple times a year. We enjoyed the diving, fishing, and most importantly, the food!
On this trip, I made a point to hit some of my favorites and some new spots which I researched while sitting at my desk the week before. On Friday, after a 5-hour jaunt from Ft. Lauderdale, my travel companion and myself were famished. He mentioned he wanted seafood which is quite easy considering Key West’s geographical location.
Conch Republic Culinary Verdict: 4 out of 5 stars
We headed to “Conch Republic” which is located smack dab in the marina. While there, we sampled DELICIOUS dishes such as fried cracked conch, conch fritters, crab stuffed mushrooms, and others which I couldn’t photograph as they were consumed immediately! Absolutely delicious!
Alonzo’s Culinary Verdict: 5 out of 5 stars
On Saturday, after a long day of jet-skiing across the rough seas of KW, we headed back to the marina to sample the fare at “Alonzo’s”, yet another Key West seafood staple. After a few Bloody Mary’s, we decided not to hold back and order anything our hearts desired! We started with a sampler comprised of Oysters Rockefeller and Buffalo-fried oysters then followed it up with smoked-mahi dip, some amazing Blue-point oysters, conch salad, and the best lobster roll in existence! An absolutely amazing culinary experience!
Two Friends Culinary Verdict: 4.5 out 5 stars
On Sunday, before a 12pm half-day fishing charter, we popped into Two Friends Patio Restaurant after hearing the kick-ass live music and drooling on their outside menu. My friend and I both had yet another delicious Bloody Mary and closed out the experience with the Shrimp Lover’s Platter, comprised of Key West Grilled Shrimp, Steamed Shrimp, and Shrimp Salad. Some of the freshest and delicious shrimp I’ve had in my eating career! And not to forget……the Key Lime Pie! (no picture as it was devoured immediately yet again lol). Great food, service, and ambiance!
After a rough yet fun day of bottom-fishing we headed back to shore with our catch comprised of yellowtail snapper, mutton snapper, and a nice kingfish! While enjoying an ice cold cerveza, our mate fillet our fish and informed us that any of the restaurants in the marina would cook our catch anyway we liked. What better place to enjoy but at Alonzo’s! We headed back to our favorite spot and enjoyed 5lbs of our catch cooked both blackened, fried, and grilled. The blackened snapper pictured at the bottom was unreal and the fried mutton was absolutely legendary! It truly was an amazing way to wrap up yet another amazing Key West!
Get out there and explore people! There’s no better place to explore but in the Conch Republic! The people, the food, ambiance, fishing, diving, etc. are some of the best in the world! Enjoy friends!
